Stages of Tattoo Healing

Once Ink penetrates your skin, you body will naturally reject the ink and try to destroy it with white blood cell. But the ink molecule is too dense and big comparing to white blood cell, you body can never destroy it and the skin lies on the dermis layer of your skin forever, this is a short description why tattoos are permanent.

With a proper advice from tattoo artist on choosing the right size for each details and placement and with great tattooing technique, your tattoo will stay nice on your skin.

There are 3 stages of tattoo healing:

  1. Inflammation Stage Day 1-3: your skin is still soft and red around your tattoo, you might ooze blood or ink in this stage. Keep your tattoo super clean and dry don’t touch your tattoos.
  2. Visible Recovery Stage Day 4-14: your tattoo will start to scab, flake, itch, and peel. In this stage you must keep your tattoo really really dry and clean. Do not pick or scratch any scabs on your tattoo it might lead to discoloration when it’s healed. Let your tattoo dry out naturally.
  3. Invisible Recovery Stage Day 15-30: Your tattoo is mostly peeled and healed. But the skin layers under the tattoo is still recovering their structure underneath you just don’t see it.
So when does tattoo fully healed? We can estimate around 30-45 days for the tattoo to fully healed and your skin is ready for a touch up if you need. Don’t get bored yet, the more you know about tattoo aftercare the better the results will be. You are nearly done, Keep on going!!!!

Our Complete Tattoo Aftercare

When you finish tattooing with us, we will decide whether if we put Saniderm film on you or wrap you up with cling wrap for the best result. We make our decision depending on your circumstances and the technique that we use to tattoo your design.

2 Things You Have to Prepare Before Go Home

1. Paper Towel for patting your tattoo dry (Can buy in the convenient stores)

2. Bepanthene First-Aid, a wound healing and antibacterial cream for applying your tattoo (Only can get from pharmacies around 160-180 Baht)

Wrapping Up Your Tattoo

1. Put on the tattoo with Saniderm: Saniderm aka Second skin is a medical grade film that you can cover while healing. It’s very convenient and easy to use but Thailand is a hot country and it peels off easily when you’re sweaty. However, you can wear the 1st film up to 24 hours after the tattoo is done comparing to the cling wrap that you have to take it out after 2-3 hours.

1. Wear the 1st film not over 24 hours

2. When you arrive home, In the shower, wash your hands nice and clean, take off the saniderm slowly (along the hairline not against), rinse the tattoo with lukewarm shower water rubbing gently and softly (No soap No shampoo), Pat your tattoo dry softly with paper towel. and apply on the 2nd film.

3. You can wear the 2nd film up to 2-3 days or you just take it off if its peeling. Repeat everything from 2* except applying new film.

4. On the next day continue Dry Healing which I’ve written below for another 7-14 days until the scabs fully peel away

*The film is not waterproof keep it dry when taking a shower

*If you feel itchy, painful, or irritated you might have allergic reaction to the film take it off right away. Wash, dry, put cream and start dry healing right away.

*Don’t sweat a lot

2. Wrapping you up with cling wrap:

Normally tattoo artist will wrap cling wrap for you after the tattoo is done. I prefer cling wrap more than saniderm because my skin can get oily in hot weather when I’m outside.

1. Wear cling wrap for 3-4 hours

2. When you arrive home, in the shower, wash your hands nice and clean, take off the cling wrap, rinse your tattoo with lukewarm water (No soap No shampoo), Pat your tattoo softly with paper towel.

3. On the next day continue Dry Healing for another 7-14 days until the scabs fully peel away

Dry Healing

In Dry Healing there are 5 most important thing everyone should follow

1. Keep your tattoo DRY: Avoid water on tattoo when showering and anything that can make your tattoo wet ex. rain, beach, swimming pool, sauna, onsen etc for 10-14 days or until tattoo is scabs falls off completely.

If you feel that you’re sweaty because of hot weather in Bangkok, Thailand and you need to clean the surface of your tattoo you can pat your tattoo softly little damp paper towel mix with clean water and pat very softly on the tattoo and pad it with another clean and dry paper towel again.

2. Keep your tattoo CLEAN: The golden rule for me is ALWAYS WASH YOUR HANDS keep your hand nice and clean before do anything to your tattoo ex. touching, putting on cream etc. Beware of pet’s hair, Avoid dirty chores, and DON’T SCRATCH OR PICK your tattoo scabs. Don’t put shampoo, soap, hair conditioner on your tattoo. Don’t put any skincare ex. sunscreen, body lotion on your tattoo. Don’t put Vaseline, baby oil, coconut oil, or any type of oil on your tattoo. Keep your tattoo clean until the scabs full peel away. The only cream you will put on to moisterize and help heal your tattoo for the next 14 days is “Bepanthene First-Aid”

3. Apply CREAM (1 cream for 1 person): The worst thing you can do to your tattoo is not putting on cream. Bepanthene First Aid Cream is the best cream for tattoo aftercare in my opinion. Make sure you have clean hands, Put a decent amount of cream on your hand so you don’t have to tattoo back and forth between cream tube and tattoo (we don’t want cross contamination the tattoo and the cream), apply lightly (too thick will trap the moisture on tattoo surface).

Apply Bepanthene First Aid Cream 3 times a day for 7-10 days, you can buy this cream in any pharmacies but not in convenient stores (around 160-180 Baht)

4. Diet: Avoid alcohol 1 day before and after the tattoo, Avoid drinking whey protein for 3 days and if you like eating eggs please eat maximum only 2 eggs/per day for 3 days from my past experience people who have fresh tattoos and eat eggs tend to have a small bump on line not as smooth compare to not eating eggs

5. Avoid Direct Sunlight: You want to avoid direct Bangkok sunlight. If you have to be in the middle of hot sun for hours, find a cloth not too tight to cover your tattoo away from the sun. After 3 weeks if you have to expose your tattoo outside in hot weather please wear sunscreen around 30-50 spf to protect your tattoo.
